Bournemouth Rugby Club Makes a Difference with Food Bank Donations

At Bournemouth Rugby Club, we believe in using our collective resources to support those in our local community who face food insecurity. Recently, during our Youth and Minis Presentation Night, we organised a collection for the Kinson and West Howe Food Bank. We are delighted to share that our donations were warmly received and greatly appreciated by the food bank staff. The impact of our contribution, coupled with the ongoing efforts of the food bank, is making a significant difference in the lives of those in crisis.

According to recent statistics, one in five people in the UK live in food poverty. This sobering reality has motivated us to take action and support those in need. In 2022 alone, the Kinson and West Howe Food Bank provided 1664 three-day emergency food parcels, effectively feeding 4253 individuals who found themselves in crisis. These numbers reflect the importance of such initiatives and highlight the critical role food banks play in our community.

Our contribution will undoubtedly help in their mission to provide essential food supplies to families in our local area. By providing over 1 tonne of food to families each week, the food bank is making a tangible difference in the lives of those who rely on their support.

We firmly believe that our responsibility extends beyond a single donation. To ensure a sustained impact, Bournemouth Rugby has established a permanent collection box in our Club Shop. This allows our members, supporters, and visitors to make donations at any time, providing ongoing support to local food banks. Every time the collection box fills up, we will promptly deliver the donations to a deserving local food bank, ensuring a steady flow of aid to those who need it most.

Bournemouth Rugby Club is proud to contribute to the fight against food poverty and support those facing food insecurity in our local community. Bournemouth Rugby Celebrates the Lifetime Achievements of Doug and Jo Warren

Bournemouth Rugby proudly recognises the exceptional contributions of Doug and Jo Warren to the club as they receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Launch Event of the Pride of Lions. This well-deserved honor celebrates their unwavering dedication, commitment, and passion for the sport and their tireless efforts in fostering the growth of rugby in the community.

Doug Warren’s journey with Bournemouth Rugby began at the age of 12 when he made a pivotal switch from soccer to rugby at Portchester School. He continued his rugby journey at Bournemouth School for Boys, playing for the 1st XV. In 1961, Doug joined Bournemouth Rugby and became an integral part of the 1st XV until November 1967 when he had to retire due to recurring serious injuries. However, this marked the beginning of a new chapter for Doug and his family.

In 1977, Doug met Ted Hill, father of Nick in the Bedouins and brother-in-law of Nigel Yeoman, who introduced him to the world of mini rugby. Doug and his son Edward attended a mini rugby session and immediately fell in love with the sport. This marked the start of their deep-rooted connection with Bournemouth Rugby.

Initially a spectator, Doug quickly embraced a new role as an assistant coach under Vernon Parkin. During those early days, the Youth & Minis section faced financial and coaching challenges. Undeterred, Doug, along with a group of enthusiastic parents, dedicated their time and efforts to make it a success. A volunteer team soon grew to support the team through various activities, such as providing food, organizing fundraisers, and maintaining the kit. Jo Warren took charge of selling kit and gradually transformed it into a well-stocked shop, serving the needs of the club.

Raising funds for the Youth & Minis became a creative endeavor for Doug and Jo. They organised sponsored events like parachute jumps, donkey derbies, pig racing, casino nights, and horse race nights. Doug even participated in a sponsored parachute jump, showcasing his dedication to the cause. The popular Mini Rugby Festival, initially small-scale, grew into one of the best festivals, thanks to the hard work of committed parents.

Doug’s involvement with Bournemouth Rugby extended beyond the Youth & Minis section. He gradually took on various roles, including coach, secretary, chairman, and representative to Dorset & Wilts. Meanwhile, Jo managed the club shop, handled finances as treasurer, and managed memberships. Doug’s passion for the club led him to delve into preserving the club’s history and keeping meticulous records based on his 1st XV team sheets.

As their own children grew up, Doug and Jo transitioned their support to the 1st team. Doug assumed responsibilities as the manager and touch judge, while Jo dedicated her time to the club shop during training and matches. Their unwavering presence on match days and their genuine love for the players and the camaraderie with other clubs have earned them great admiration.

With a sense of completion to their roles, Doug stepped down as Chairman. However, at the Annual General Meeting, the committee recognised his exceptional service and created a new position, President, which was entrusted to Doug. As President, he continues to tirelessly promote the club and its values, embodying the true spirit of Bournemouth Rugby.

Jo Warren’s steadfast support and indispensable contributions cannot be overstated. While overseeing the club shop, she ensures smooth operations and provides unwavering support to Doug. Her presence in the background has been a pillar of strength for the club, and her attention to detail is second to none.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards presented to Doug and Jo Warren by Bournemouth Rugby Club exemplify their outstanding commitment, dedication, and selfless service to the sport and the community. Their tireless efforts have significantly impacted the growth and success of Bournemouth Rugby, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Bournemouth Rugby Club extends its warmest congratulations to Doug and Jo Warren on this well-deserved recognition of their lifetime achievements. They truly embody the spirit of Bournemouth Rugby
