Events and Club Engagement Co-ordinator

Bournemouth Rugby are seeking a volunteer to support them with Events and Club Engagement which in turn will support the club with their fundraising. The last two years have been particularly hard because of the pandemic and now the ongoing cost of living crisis. A club like Bournemouth lives off the generosity of others and fundraising relies heavily on local businesses sponsoring the club as and when they can. We are now only generating a third of the sponsorship prior to the start of the pandemic and these circumstances have led to the need for this new role. The engagement Co-ordinator will work with every section of the club from the youngest to the oldest helping to take the club to its 130th year.

Where

This role is a voluntary role within Bournemouth Rugby and events and engagement will normally take place at Chapel Gate or sometimes within venues in BCP. Where the events take place is at the discretion of the job holder working alongside the Executive Committee.

When

This is an ongoing role all year to ensure that we can keep the club members and supporter engaged during the season and out of season as well.

Time Commitment

This is a flexible role, and the time you need to commit is dependent on the number of fundraising activities organised. The opportunity to meet regularly with the Club Executive Committee will ensure that you are fully supported within the role. It’s important that the holder of the role is involved specifically with the Finance Team so that fundraising targets can be set accordingly maximising the efficiency of the role.

Tasks involved

The number one task for the job holder is to raise as much funding as possible from the current list of stakeholders and engaging and working to bring new stakeholders to the club.

Attending meetings with operations team, Executive committee and club sections

Planning and organising club events including Fundraising events with the support of the Operations Team and Executive committee

Working with the Operations Manager to help recruit event volunteers.

If you are interested in applying for this role please email Becky Hill at secretary@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk with an expression of interest.

Steve Bernard Foundation Charity Draw

Saturday 25th September saw the conclusion for the Charity Draw after the 1st XV home match against Drybrook. Bournemouth Rugby had joined together with the Steve Bernard Foundation to raise money for the club and the foundation. A massive thank you to everyone who supported this and we are delighted to announce that we raised £1,920.

The Steve Bernard Foundation was set up in memory of the affectionately named Stevie B following his tragic passing in a car accident in November 2005. Following his death, his family and friends were inundated with support and donations. It seemed right, even in the earliest stages that these funds should go to that which Steve loved best, Sport.

Since the foundation was formed in February 2006, it has gone on to raise more than £450,000 for sporting projects based across Bournemouth, Dorset and the South Coast. To date, the foundation has supported more than 400 projects covering more than 30 sports and 4 continents.

The foundation, run entirely by volunteers, has offered guidance, financial support and predominantly equipment to a range of good causes ranging from supporting the AFC Bournemouth Ability Counts Team to potential Olympic athletes of the future; from providing new kit to local boxing clubs to funding outreach projects in Thailand, Uganda and Kenya.

Everything which has been achieved has been guided by Steve’s memory and an incredible passion for sport. We love what we do and we would love for you to join us on our journey.

England Touch releases Return to Play Briefing Document

Touch has been approved to return to play as part of recent submissions presented by the Rugby Football League and Rugby Football Union, and in line with both organisations England Touch is moving to Stage 3 in its Return to Play Plan – equivalent to RFL Stage 3 and RFU Stage C of their respective roadmaps.

England Touch has released the Association’s Return to Play Briefing Document for all affiliated clubs, leagues and individual members.

This means that England Touch clubs can now:

  • Return to full rules of play for Touch
  • Return to full club training
  • Remove the restriction on groups of six, but maintaining numbers below 30 on any one Touch field (including officials and coaches)
  • Return to local competitive ETA affiliated leagues (in so much as each league is treated as a single venue)

Intra-club activity will be permitted at this stage and no inter-club matches or competitions between clubs should be arranged unless as part of a local approved ETA affiliated league.

Appropriate documentation will be reviewed and completed before training can resume. Details of new training dates will be announced shortly.

Cathi Farrer is looking forward to bossing the England boys about at the Touch Rugby World Cup

Cathi Farrer is looking forward to bossing the England boys about at the Touch Rugby World Cup in Malaysia later this month.
The Bournemouth University graduate moved to the area in 2002 for her studies, and has been here ever since.
She now works for the Bournemouth Parks Foundation and says being outdoors in the local area fuels her enthusiasm for the sport.
She said: “I guess it is definitely a correlation as to why I first got into rugby with knowing all of the parks here in the area because I have played rugby in most of them at some point.
“I absolutely love being outdoors and love being in touch with nature.
“I have never been to Malaysia before so I am super excited to go there for the first time.”
Ferrer will run out for the Mixed Over 30s team in Kuala Lumpur – which sees three men and three women take to the field together.
From the Bournemouth Touch Rugby Team, Cathi Farrer and Kara Buckley will represent England in the Mixed 30s division.
Daniel Connolly and Nicholas Best will feature in the Men’s 35s tournament, and Shane Wilson has also been named in the Men’s 40s squad.
This is the first time Farrer has played at the six-day event, but England won bronze last time in 2015 behind New Zealand and Australia – who they face first on May 1.
Farrer says the two antipodean sides will be the ones to watch out for when the event gets underway.
She added: “It is six days of competition and with the Touch Rugby World Cup there are different age categories so I play in a Masters team so you have to be over 30 to play in my team.
“You can either play men’s touch, women’s touch or mixed and I play mixed as well so there are six people on the pitch and for the mixed team there will be three boys and three girls on the pitch at any one time.
“It is cool with everyone all playing on the same side together – it is definitely a unique dynamic when you have guys and girls playing on the same team.
“I guess I have played in my team for a couple of years now so I am very confident about bossing the boys around now which is normally what happens when I am on the pitch.”

What started out as a hobby has now turned into a trip to Malaysia to play in a World Cup

What started out as a hobby to keep fit for Dan Connolly has now turned into a trip to Malaysia to play in a World Cup.
The Welshman used to play for Bournemouth Rugby Club under former coach David Dunn, before becoming backs coach during their rise into National Two South.
With the club winning promotion back into the fourth tier of English rugby following a successful campaign this season, the ex-London Welsh player is now travelling to Malaysia to play Touch.
He said: “I played at Bournemouth for a season then the following season they asked me to be the backs coach so I did a couple of seasons as we went up into National Two South.
“Then I just started getting a bit old and wanted to take a step back from rugby so started playing touch rugby and there were different groups in Bournemouth doing touch rugby.
“I started playing with them just with the intention of doing it for a bit of fun and then was asked to do the different regional touch rugby.
“Then I was asked to be in the England squad so what was supposed to be a bit of a hobby to keep fit, meant I actually ended up getting into the England team and then I did the Euros last year.”
Connolly will play for the Men’s Over 35s team at the tournament, and will face Fiji on April 30 first, before matches against Australia and Cook Islands on May 1, then New Zealand and USA on May 2.
He qualifies to play for England because he was born in this country and has English parents.
But he grew up in Wales and says there is a mixture of lots of different nationalities in the squad – which has helped with the team bonding.
He added: “I consider myself British because I have English parents and was born in England but grew up in Wales.
“I suppose when you play for Wales, you have to sign a contract to say you will support them – and I suppose pledge allegiance to Wales.
“There is a bit of banter in the team with a couple of guys from Wales, one from South Africa, and a couple of guys from Australia so the heritage of the team is pretty mixed.
“But it is a great group of guys and we all get along really well and are good friends.”
