Wheelchair Rugby Cubs

We are excited to now offer wheelchair rugby to a growing squad of junior players, from age 8 upwards. Being the only wheelchair rugby club in the county we have had the creation of a junior team on our development plans for many years so those under 18 can also enjoy our exciting sport. This past year with everyone having to cope with Covid restrictions, has created a heightened demand so since starting up again, we now regularly welcome over 10 junior players to our youth training sessions.

If you’re interested, or know someone who is, new players get 4 free taster sessions in order to give it a try. Please contact club secretary Sandra Jones at: wheelchair.rugby@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk or club Chair, Becky Hill at: wr.chair@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk.

We’re Back!

Whilst we have been able to take advantage of an exemption for disability sport during the Covid restrictions and train for some months now, the team are excited to be back to full contact practice with the lifting of restrictions. 3 hour training wearing face masks and concentrating mainly on strength and conditioning has been a challenge but we are confident this will be to our advantage for when we resume competitive matches.

So now is a good time, should any new players like to join in the fun and find out more about this exciting and growing sport. The senior team’s first outing will be at the GBWR’s Big Rugby Return Big Rugby Return – Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (gbwr.org.uk) Social Festival in Portsmouth on 22nd August.

Bournemouth Lions Wheelchair Rugby host the final leg of the inaugural South West Development League

The 15th March sees Bournemouth Lions Wheelchair Rugby host the final leg of the inaugural South West Development League at Sir David English. Over the past year our players have developed their play and competitively competed against other teams including some who have international players within their teams.

The Lions team, sponsored by Grinning Dog Records, will welcome opposition teams from Bristol Bears, West Country Hawks, Team Solent Sharks. The round-robin tournament will tip-off at 10.30am.

The league will play WR5s. WR5s has allowed the sport of wheelchair rugby to be introduced to a wider audience, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits that come with participating in organised sports. WR5s is open to anyone with a physical impairment including paraplegics, whereas the Paralympic discipline of wheelchair rugby is aimed at those with disabilities affecting 4 limbs such as tetraplegic players.

Head coach Rob Emery said ‘I am super excited to see how we get on as we have been making steady progress throughout the past while. It would be great if we could top the table in our home tournament as we have finished 2nd in both the Bristol and Southampton legs.

We are heading into the new 5’s season and it would be a superb boost for our troops to round off with a win, especially off the back of all our hard work and tweaks we have made to our playing style. As always the Hawks are a great team to test yourself against, along with the ever improving Bears and Sharks sides.

We look forward to home ground advantage and having friends, family and the local community down to support us.’

As Bournemouth Lions Wheelchair Rugby team continues to grow and develop we are delighted that we now have 2 junior players within the club. If you would like to get involved with the senior or the junior teams please contact wheelchair-rugby@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk
