New Girls Coaching Team 2022-23

We are delighted to confirm the new BRFC Girls Coaching team for the forthcoming 2022-23 season to follow in the footsteps Paige, Rob, Molly and Chris and their outstanding work executed across the previous seasons – and wish them well in their future endeavours both on and off the pitch. Their support, dedication and passion for the development of Girls rugby has been greatly appreciated by all at BRFC.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming season we have been able to confirm a new coaching team to support the Girls section moving forward and are delighted to be able to confirm the following coaching team.

KATIE HEENAN (LEAD COACH)

“I started playing rugby when I was 12 and fell in love with the sport! I’ve been playing for 11 years now and I’ve played in 5 different countries, for 7 different teams, even playing at Twickenham.

I’m now the vice-captain of EDDRFC, where I play second row. It’s really important to me that young rugby players see strong female role-models, as we are the future of the sport! I’ve been lucky enough to train and play with amazing rugby players like Rocky Clarke MBE and Sarah Hunter, who show that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

I’m looking forward to bringing my passion and experience to Bournemouth RFU, and having lots of fun on the way!”

Ami Cairns (Assistant Coach)

“I’ve always been interested in sports and pushed for girls teams whilst growing up. I have a keen passion for physical education and science, so when I’m not working in a lab I like to be doing exercise and team sports.

Currently playing wing and fullback positions, but the occasional fly-half in training has been known to happen. At the end of last season I was award most improved player / the Golden Boot!

Alongside rugby I am an assistant instructor for Tae Kwon Do and also SUP and sea swim as much as possible. I have competed in a local triathlon two years running and want to continue to promote and teach sport to young people. Before moving to the coast I was a Girl Guiding Unit leader for over six years and worked with children in sports and activity backgrounds.”

Conrad Carkeet (Assistant Coach)

Conrad has played for Bournemouth as a Mini and Youth player. Conrad has played through the DW county system at youth level and trialled twice for SW U20s (injury and covid stopped further advances). He has also has 4 caps for Hampshire senior men’s team.

He spent time at the Bath academy and also trialled for Wales at u18s level while regularly playing for The Welsh exiles.

He made his debut for Bournemouth 1st XV at the age of 17 and apart from last season where he went and spent a season with Roslyn park in National 1 he continues his playing career back in red and black at Bournemouth.

Conrad is a Level 1 coach and referee and looks forward to being part of the Girls coaching set up this season.

The team are very much looking forward to meeting the BRFC Girls and moving their rugby development and enjoyment of the sport forward across next season.

The first session back for the 2022-23 season will be on Sunday 11th September at Chapel Gate (1100-1300hrs) – and is open to existing and new players. Further information will follow across the next two weeks – please contact Greg Pike (greg.pike@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk) for any immediate questions/enquiries.

We look forward to welcoming the Girls back and are excited for the what the coming season will hold!

Youth Weekend Round

Player of the month - Bournemouth Girls

U13s Winner – Izzy Clayton

Izzy has played rugby here at Bournemouth RFC for the last 4 seasons. Originally starting off playing with girls Izzy relished the opportunity to play with the boys and some of her friends and so she spent a full season with the u11s.
Izzy rejoined us last season and has continued to flourish over the last two seasons with the Girls and has been ever present at training and fixtures.
Izzy is a strong player with great core skills and is real leader in our u13s team.
It is her demonstration however of some of rugby’s core values that her seen her recognised for this award.
Izzy has been amazing in offering help and support with those less confident than her in the tackle. She has encouraged others and also demonstrated to others to help build their confidence. A real team player.

U15s Winner – Rebecca Goldsmith-Wass

Rebecca has been playing here at Bournemouth RFC for the last two seasons. Rebecca has a love of sport and regularly doubles up her training nights with both Rugby followed by Hockey.
In her short time with us Becca has grown into a very much liked member of the team who is always friendly and welcoming to everyone especially new players. Playing continuously with a smile on her face she is a dream to coach.
Becca has demonstrated all the key values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and sportsmanship. And for these reasons she is a very deserving recipient of this award

Faith has only been with us a few weeks however it is fair to say that she has made an immediate impact with us.
Having played rugby 7s regularly in Texas, Faiths core skills of run, catch and pass are of a very high standard. Her reading of the game and communication to others is also of the highest order.
Faith is willing to help and encourage others around her and to pass on some of the skills she has learnt in the US.
Faiths willingness to get involved and play with enjoyment along with her encouragement of others is the reason she has been recognised for this award. A very deserving recipient of this award

Under 13

Bournemouth Under 13’s were away to Trojans. Team manager Grant said “Thanks to parents for taking time to bring the players to Eastleigh, all coaches thought all players put in a very good shift, giving their full commitment and energy to the game and the team. Players are falling into their roles nicely and building on their individual responsibilities. Trojans tackled well and were low in the rucks and had a good handle on hooking in the scrum with their “Inspector gadget leg’s” hooker! Things we need to build on but we also won quite a few rucks which was good to see. Trojans was a very welcoming club with good facilities and we look forward to welcoming them to Bournemouth in January.”

Under 14

Our Under 14’s seem to be going from strength to strength fielding two teams both playing competitive games this Sunday.

Our development team faced a strong Dorchester team away. Whilst the game was planned as a development game due to sickness and availability they faced a much stronger side. Despite this they continued to play with the spirit of a lion, loosing but gaining vital experience and game time.

Our other team were at home against Winchester. Coach Wheeler said “Well done boys, a great game, Lions roar.” With praise from a number of sources our under 14’s are becoming a force to be reckoned with.

Well done boys and the coaching team.

Portsmouth v colts

Bournemouth Rugby Colts played away at Portsmouth, Coach Burns said “Incredible performance by the boys who travelled to Portsmouth. Coming away victorious.” Final score Portsmouth 29 v 38 Bournemouth. The Colts running in a total of 6 tries to 4.

The Colts also saw four players selected to play for the Hampshire county team, this Sunday they were presented with their county ties. Congratulations on your achievements.

Youth Weekend Round-Up 31/10/21

Unfortunately BU closed Chapel Gate for all sport on Sunday due to water logged pitches and weather conditions. Making the site unsafe for outside sport to take place. Despite this we see our players of te annoucement of our players of the month and the Under 14’s in the 2nd Round of the Hampshire cup

Player of the month U9 - Reece

Reece has shown great intelligence on the pitch. He has excellent spatial awareness and support play, seemingly always in a great position. Couple that with a few diving try-saving tackles, he earns the U9s player of the month. Well done Reece! Coaches Neil, Andy, Mike and Jimmy.

Under 14

Our Under 14’s did manage to get game on Sunday playing away in the U14’s Hampshire Cup 2nd Round. The under 14’s played made the club proud putting playing with vigour and the spirt of the Lions. A special mention to the forwards, they were immense and secured plenty of ball for the backs today that built a great platform to attack from. Everyone put in a massive shift in defence too. Bournemouth overcome a strong and determined Wimborne team winning 5 – 25. Well done!

player of the month u13 - george

Bournemouth Rugby U13’s coaching squad announced last Wednesday during a soggy training session that George Curtis is our BRFC October player of the month. George is a power house in the forwards and demonstrates how to be a solid, resilient wall of defence particularly during our first friendly fixture in 18 months recently.

George has been the cornerstone of the U13’s support in the ruck to retain the ball and push forward. He has worked hard this season and is an asset to the squad. Well done George in being awarded Player of the Month for October.

7 Reasons Why I should give Bournemouth Women’s Rugby a go

There are a number of benefits from team sports, teamwork, confidence, friendship, leadership, respect – the list goes on. What makes rugby unique is that everyone has a place, we are all inclusive.

Why Women Should Join Bournemouth Rugby:

  1. The workout

Playing rugby will be one of the best workouts of your life, with strong arms needed for tackling and throwing, and muscular strength required for this contact sport. It develops the leg muscles because running and battling in scrums need powerful leg muscles. The full body workout will transform your body quicker than most gym programs

  1. Improve mental heath

For these people, the pressures and strains of life and work can act as a catalyst to mental health problems, with the most common being depression and anxiety. Rugby can be beneficial in increasing confidence, make you resilient as well the physical benefits. These benefits you, friends and family will notice both on and off the field of play.

  1. The Social Life

Rugby is the one sport that’s well known for its social life, from a quick drink after training to rugby tours both Nationally and Internationally. It’ll also promote a healthy competitive edge and provide a wealth of experiences, from the disappointment of defeat to the thrill of victory. These opportunities forge lifetime friendships, and mutual respect for players from both sides.

  1. The friendships

Like most all team sports you form friendships. What makes rugby stand out from the crowd is that you’ll make unbreakable bonds, both on and off the pitch. You’ll go to battle on the pitch doing everything for your team. After the match into the bar or a drink or two with both your teammates and the opposition.

  1. It’s safer than people make out

Rugby is a physical game there is no getting away from this. But player welfare is key, the laws of the game have developed to protect players from dangerous play. Training, education and physical conditioning help you prepare for games both physically and mentally.

  1. Why play rugby?

You probably don’t need any more convincing, but there are plenty more benefits of playing rugby that we haven’t mentioned. Rugby is good for you in terms of your physical fitness, absolutely, but it also promotes a healthy social balance and fantastic psychological benefits. It can teach basic life skills – such as discipline, team-work and communication – by experiences, so the earlier you start playing, the better. BUT, even if you’re 50 years old and never played before, it’s never too late to reap the mental and physical benefits of rugby. Rugby is for everyone.

  1. Everyone welcome, it’s fun!

We welcome everyone, any body type is welcomed. It doesn’t matter if you’re a 15 stone brick wall or a slim nimble runner, we have a position for you. If your bigger and stronger, you’ll be have fun been in the impregnable brick wall, if your our nimble, agile runner then perhaps the wing is for you. Either way we have a position for you. We look forward to seeing you tonight!

Steve Bernard Foundation Charity Draw

Saturday 25th September saw the conclusion for the Charity Draw after the 1st XV home match against Drybrook. Bournemouth Rugby had joined together with the Steve Bernard Foundation to raise money for the club and the foundation. A massive thank you to everyone who supported this and we are delighted to announce that we raised £1,920.

The Steve Bernard Foundation was set up in memory of the affectionately named Stevie B following his tragic passing in a car accident in November 2005. Following his death, his family and friends were inundated with support and donations. It seemed right, even in the earliest stages that these funds should go to that which Steve loved best, Sport.

Since the foundation was formed in February 2006, it has gone on to raise more than £450,000 for sporting projects based across Bournemouth, Dorset and the South Coast. To date, the foundation has supported more than 400 projects covering more than 30 sports and 4 continents.

The foundation, run entirely by volunteers, has offered guidance, financial support and predominantly equipment to a range of good causes ranging from supporting the AFC Bournemouth Ability Counts Team to potential Olympic athletes of the future; from providing new kit to local boxing clubs to funding outreach projects in Thailand, Uganda and Kenya.

Everything which has been achieved has been guided by Steve’s memory and an incredible passion for sport. We love what we do and we would love for you to join us on our journey.
