Bournemouth Rugby Club Continues its Commitment to Tackle Hunger in the Community

In a remarkable display of community spirit, Bournemouth Rugby Club made a significant impact in the fight against hunger last year through their food bank collections.

Throughout 2023, the club’s initiative made a substantial difference, especially for the Kinson and West Howe Food Bank. The latest statistics from the Kinson and West Howe food bank for the year 2023 reveal the staggering impact of their work. A total of 2233 three-day emergency food parcels were provided to individuals and families facing crises, marking a notable increase from 1664 parcels in the previous year.

The food bank also witnessed a rise in the number of individuals fed, with 5364 adults and children benefitting from the support, compared to 4253 in 2022. Last year alone, 3649 adults and 1985 children receiving essential food parcels, reflecting a commendable 30% increase over the previous year.

The month of December, often a challenging time for many, resulting in the distribution of 270 food parcels to those in need.

As the club enters the new year, their commitment to addressing food insecurity remains unwavering. Bournemouth Rugby Club has pledged to continue its food bank collections, recognising the ongoing need within the community. The collective efforts of the club, its members, and supporters underscore the positive impact that sports organizations can have beyond the field.

Simon Carkeet, Chair of Bournemouth Rugby Club, expressed pride in the club’s contribution to supporting the local food banks. “Rugby is more than just a sport for us; it’s about being part of a community and making a difference where we can. The increase in demand for food parcels highlights the challenges faced by many in our community, and we are committed to doing our part in addressing this issue,” he stated.

The club encourages its members, supporters, and the wider community to join hands in this ongoing effort to alleviate hunger and support those facing difficult times. By continuing their food bank collections, Bournemouth Rugby Club aims to play a vital role in ensuring that no one in the community goes hungry, embodying the true spirit of unity and compassion.

Important Message to Bournemouth Rugby Club Members and Supporters

As we kick off the new year, we want to bring your attention to an important development from the RFU (Rugby Football Union) regarding Match Official Abuse (MOA). The RFU Head of the Judiciary has issued new guidance effective from January 1, 2024, which mandates that all sanctions for proven instances of Match Official Abuse will be aggravated by an additional number of weeks/matches. This policy will be implemented across all levels of the game. This means you will get a ban from playing/attending games by the RFU on top of what the club would give as a result of being found guilty of MOA

Recent statistics reveal that nearly 20% of all discipline cases in rugby are related to MOA. Shockingly, about half of match officials have reported instances of abuse during the last season. In light of these troubling numbers and recognising the crucial role match officials play in our beloved sport, the RFU is taking a strong stand to address this issue.

At Bournemouth Rugby, we fully endorse and support the RFU’s initiative to combat abuse in the game. As a club, we are committed to maintaining a positive and respectful environment on and off the field. Therefore, we want to make it clear that we will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to ANY ABUSE from players, coaches, or spectators.

This strict stance applies to all levels within the club.

Our Club Values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship Bournemouth Rugby holds values that are integral to the spirit of our club and the sport we love. Match Official Abuse falls far from these values, and we will not tolerate any actions that undermine the integrity of the game.

Disciplinary Process at Bournemouth Rugby:

  1. Anyone accused of Match Official Abuse will be required to attend the club disciplinary hearing.
  2. The individual will also be expected to pay the sanctioned fine associated with this charge.

Let’s ensure that Bournemouth Rugby continues to be a club known for its TREDS. Our collective commitment to upholding the integrity of the game will strengthen our community and the sport we hold dear.

Benjamin’s attitude and dedication to rugby make him a worthy winner of the player of the month. At a young age he is showing the skills and temperament to becoming a very promising player. Quick feet, balance and speed are all qualities Benjamin possesses but what sets him apart is his approach to training. We are very proud of him and he richly deserves player of the month.

David Dunn Returns to Bournemouth

It brings us great pleasure to announce that from immediate effect Dave Dunn will be taking over the roll as Director of Rugby at Bournemouth, Dave will be a familiar face to some as he was a former DoR and Head coach of Bournemouth RFC and finished with us back in 2013 after taking us to the National leagues.

Dave was then given the honour of becoming a Life Vice President of the club.

He has always kept a close eye on the clubs progress and always expressed an interest in returning to work with us.

He is looking forward to working with Dan Connolly and his coaching team, along with the players to ensure a positive and successful environment. Within his role he will also work closely with the Excom team to ensure the management and administration is as streamlined as the rugby.

CS Stags vs. Bournemouth Lions

After a triumphant weekend for the Wanderers and Vets, the spotlight now shifts to the Lions as they prepare to roar back into action against CS Stags in a crucial Regional 1 South Central Rugby clash on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023.

The Lions, adorned in their signature red and black, have showcased a season of highs and lows, with flashes of brilliance juxtaposed against moments of missed opportunities. Despite finding themselves at the bottom of the table, the Lions’ potential is undeniable, and Saturday’s game offers them a chance to turn the tide.

CS Stags, positioned mid-table in 6th with 25 points, stand as a formidable opponent. While their season has been a mix of victories and defeats, their ability to secure vital bonus points has set them apart. The Lions, lagging with 13 points, are determined to capitalize on CS Stags’ recent loss to Brighton and exploit their strengths in running the ball, a key asset for the Lions this season.

A historic Achilles’ heel for the Lions has been the scrum, but hope looms on the horizon with the return of key players. Lucca and Napier anchor the front row alongside Freddy Harding, providing a bolstered scrum. In the second row, Brett Pointing retains his spot, with Connor McCathrey joining him. The dynamic flankers, Reece Savage and Stan Vincent, bring their A-game, while Joe Desmond’s return from injury at No8 adds further depth to the back row.

The back row remains unchanged from their last outing against London Welsh, creating a cohesive unit that aims to take the game to CS Stags with relentless attack play. On the bench, the Lions boast strength in Henry Turner, Euan Tremlett, and the returning Maverick Goodchild.

This formidable lineup positions the Lions for a redemption match against CS Stags. The key strategy revolves around swift ball movement, exploiting attacking opportunities, and challenging CS Stags’ strong defense. Kick-off is set for 2 pm at King’s House Sports Ground, Duke’s Meadows Riverside Drive, Chiswick, London, W4 2SH.

For Lions supporters, a coach is available with seats priced at £10 each. Contact Gemma at operations@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk to secure your spot. It’s time for the Lions to rise, show their capabilities, and paint London red and black! 🦁🔴⚫️ #LionsRoar #RedemptionGame #BournemouthRugby 🏉✨

Youth player of the month

Congratulations eddie buchanan

The U11s Player of the Month is Eddie “Loves A Maul” Buchanan.

Eddie continually role models our high expectation of TREDS; just recently, when one of his teammates was struggling to keep up with the warm up, Eddie waited for him, put his arm round his shoulders and encouraged him to finish. He is also always the first to volunteer to run our child-led warm-ups and always the first to offer to sub.

Eddie really is Mr Bournemouth Rugby, with his unwavering passion and enthusiasm for the rugby club as a whole and it makes him a joy to coach. He loves to bring 1st XV tricks into our game; from “playing dead” on the floor of a ruck and running back onside with his arms in the air, to insisting all of our subs wear half on/half off bibs and showing us specific stretches he’s seen on Saturdays, he keeps us all on our toes!

Congratulations Jenson

Jenson is a player that every coach would be proud to have in their age group! Ever present, polite and kind and always trying his hardest.

Jenson joined Bournemouth Rugby in the Lion Cubs two seasons ago and has been one of the most consistent players since then.

We’re super proud to be able to celebrate Jenson’s award of player of the month with him and hope he enjoys the day.

Weekend Rugby Showdown at Chapel Gate! Lions, Nomads, and Wanderers in Action

Bournemouth Rugby is set for another thrilling weekend with Lions, Nomads, and Wanderers all taking center stage at Chapel Gate. Three battles, three stories, and a pitch that promises challenges with the weather playing its part.

Lions Roar for Redemption:

The Lions, still feeling the sting of last week’s unfortunate outcome against Hammersmith & Fulham, are determined to turn the tide. A penalty try and a converted try shaped the fate, but this week, they welcome London Welsh for a rematch at Chapel Gate. Current stats sit at one game apiece, and those who remember last season’s clash know what a spectacle it was.

London Welsh, positioned 5th in the league with 6 wins from 9 games, are no easy opponents. Lions, currently in 11th, are seeking vital points before the Christmas break. London Welsh’s recent victory against Brighton showcased their second-half prowess, a threat the Lions must be vigilant against. Injuries sideline key players, but debutants Piran Gallinton and Brett Pointing step up, adding a fresh dynamic to the Lions lineup.

Nomads Return Home:

Nomads, back on home turf for only the second time this season, face Ellingham & Ringwood in a matchup that promises intensity. With just one point separating the teams, this clash could reshuffle the mid-table standings. Nomas, consistent and building momentum, drew against Portsmouth last weekend, a game they felt they could have won.

Ellingham & Ringwood, currently in 9th, aim to prove themselves against familiar faces. Nomads introduce a new centre pairing of Sam Walker & Luke Chandler, with the return of Maverick Goodchild adding experience to the lineup. The Nomads, eager to capitalize on recent performances, are set for an enthralling contest.

Wanderers Enter Cup Territory:

The Wanderers kick off their cup campaign against league leaders Puddletown, seeking redemption for their earlier defeat this season. Recent games have shown the Wanderers’ potential, with a notable win against Dorchester last weekend. Now, they aim to carry that momentum into the cup competition.

Despite being towards the bottom of the league, the Wanderers are finding their stride. The soggy pitches and impending rain pose challenges, but the team is ready for the fight.

🌧️ Weather Advisory: Chapel Gate pitches are soggy, and with more rain forecasted, all games are subject to pitch inspections in the morning. Keep an eye on social media for updates.

Kick-off Times:

Lions: 2:00 PM

Nomads: 2:30 PM

Wanderers: 2:00 PM

Injured Players Fund

Bournemouth Rugby are endeavouring to establish a specialised fund aimed at providing crucial support to players who sustain injuries while actively participating in rugby under the banner of Bournemouth. Despite our players being insured through the RFU, not all injuries are comprehensively covered, leaving players unexpectedly exposed. In response to this, we are initiating the creation of a fund designed to offer assistance to our players during periods of injury.

This fund will be dedicated to alleviating the financial burden associated with injuries, covering expenses such as scans, loss of earnings, treatment, further rehabilitation, and more. By contributing to this fund, you directly contribute to the well-being of our dedicated players, acknowledging the sacrifices they make by putting their bodies on the line for the love of the game.

During the season we will have collection buckets at home games to take donations these will be on the gate and will be placed by the bar whilst the game is on and especially for the half time beers. As well as this all away games the teams will be provided scratch cards to generate cash for the fund. In special cases where funds already raised don’t meet needs of the player a fund me page could be looked into. This initiative is been run by the players.

To inaugurate this fund, we’ve launched a ‘Spot the Ball’ fundraising initiative to gather contributions. This will run until 27th November 23. We invite you to lend your support to this endeavour. Participants stand a chance to win 10% of the total funds raised by correctly identifying the spot closest to the ball. Your involvement not only adds excitement to the initiative but also directly contributes to the success of our fund, assisting injured players in their time of need. Thank you for supporting our cause!

Saturday Showdown: Bournemouth Rugby Teams Set for Action

This Saturday, Bournemouth Rugby is gearing up for a trio of thrilling clashes as Lions, Nomads, and Wanderers hit the road for their respective battles. Kick-off for all matches is set for 2:30 PM, promising an afternoon of intense rugby action.

Lions Roar into the Big Smoke:

The Lions, showing promise in their ranks, embark on a journey to the Hurlingham Club in the heart of the Big Smoke to face Hammersmith & Fulham. Although we haven’t crossed paths with Hammersmith & Fulham for quite some time, the clash promises to be a closely contested affair.

Hammersmith & Fulham, with three victories from eight games, currently sit in 8th place with 18 points. The Lions, with two wins, are eager to level the playing field. The recent 41-0 loss against Bracknell exposed Hammersmith & Fulham’s passive start, a vulnerability the Lions will look to exploit.

In the Lions’ lineup, changes include Fitch moving to fly half and Harry Costello stepping in as fullback. In the pack, Jonathan Young returns, and Stan Vincent, the standout player from the Camberley game, retains his spot. The Lions are determined to target this game for a crucial win and progress up the table.

Nomads Face Portsmouth Challenge:

Under the guidance of Ian Moore, the Nomads hit the M27 to take on Portsmouth. Portsmouth, boasting four wins from six games, currently sits in 5th place with 20 points. The Nomads, having won only one from seven, are seeking redemption and aiming to disrupt Portsmouth’s winning streak.

With a consistent selection and key changes, including Jeffes returning as fly half and Connor Moore moving to scrum-half, the Nomads are ready for the challenge. Portsmouth’s recent victory against Havant poses a formidable obstacle, but the Nomads are geared up for a 2:30 PM kickoff.

Wanderers Eye Away Points Against Dorchester:

On the road to Dorchester, the Wanderers aim to secure much-needed away points in a 2:30 PM clash. Dorchester, with two wins from five games, presents an opportunity for the Wanderers to capitalize and climb the ranks.

In a league where fixture fulfillment can impact standings, the Wanderers are determined to showcase their capabilities. With a squad of 22 players, the Wanderers are ready for a hard-fought battle and look to make their mark on the scoreboard.

Don’t miss the action-packed Saturday as Bournemouth Rugby teams embark on these challenging encounters. Stay tuned for updates and brace yourself for an afternoon of rugby excitement!

Youth player of the month

U10s Player of the month, it’s with great pleasure that we can announce we have not one but two players of the month.

Congratulations Alfie Deakin-Pugh

The first player we have chosen is because of a fantastic attitude he has shown to the concept of teamwork. This player has been using his skills not only to improve his own team game but to welcome our new members and encourage them in the start of their rugby journey.

Congratulations Archie Curtis

The second player we have chosen is because of their consistently excellent attitude. He has a natural gift for rugby but also for leading and bringing the team together. This player is incredibly respectful – to the point where he is often seen holding back on the impact of his tackles, using quick judgement on the confidence of the opponent and afterwards, offering encouragement.
